The English Springer Spaniel is a breed of gun dog in the Spaniel family traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. It is an affectionate, excitable breed with an average lifespan of twelve to fourteen years. Descended from the Norfolk or Shropshire Spaniels of the mid-19th century, the breed has diverged into separate show and working lines. The breed suffers from average health complaints. History:
The term "Bulldog" was first mentioned in literature around 1500, the oldest spelling of the word being Bondogge and Bolddogge. The first reference to the word with the modern spelling is dated 1631 or 1632 in a letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes: "procuer mee two good Bulldogs, and let them be sent by ye first shipp". In 1666 Christopher Merret applied: "Canis pugnax, a Butchers Bull or Bear Dog." as an entry in his Pinax Rerum Naturalium Britannicarum.

The designation "bull" was applied because of the dog's use in the sport of bull baiting. This entailed the setting of dogs (after placing wagers on each dog) onto a tethered bull. The dog that grabbed the bull by the nose and pinned it to the ground would be the victor. It was common for a bull to maim or kill several dogs at such an event, either by goring, tossing, or trampling. Over the centuries, dogs used for bull-baiting developed the stocky bodies and massive heads and jaws that typify the breed as well as a ferocious and savage temperament. Bull-baiting, along with bear-baiting, reached the peak of its popularity in England in the early 1800s until they were both made illegal by the Cruelty to Animals Act 1835. This amended the existing legislation to protect animals from mistreatment and included (as "cattle") bulls, dogs, bears, and sheep, so that bull and bear-baiting as well as cockfighting became prohibited. Therefore, the Old English Bulldog had outlived its usefulness in England as a sporting animal and its active or "working" days were numbered. However, emigrants did have a use for such dogs in the New World. In mid-17th century New York, Bulldogs were used as a part of a citywide roundup effort led by Governor Richard Nicolls. Because cornering and leading wild bulls were dangerous, Bulldogs were trained to seize a bull by its nose long enough for a rope to be secured around its neck. Bulldogs as pets were continually promoted by dog dealer Bill George.

The type was originally called the Dürrbächler, for a small town (Dürrbach) where the large dogs were especially frequent.[9] In the early 1900s, fanciers exhibited the few examples of the large dogs at shows in Berne, and in 1907 a few breeders from the Burgdorf region founded the first breed club, the Schweizerische Dürrbach-Klub, and wrote the first Standard which defined the dogs as a separate breed. By 1910, there were already 107 registered members of the breed. There is a photo of a working Bernese Mountain Dog, dated 1905 at the Fumee Fall rest area in Quinnesec, MI.

Country of Origin: The Pomeranian (also known as the ‘Pom’, ‘Toy German Spitz’, ‘Deutscher Zwergspitz’, or ‘Zwers’) descends from sled dogs of Greenland. ‘Pomerania’ is a district directly south of the Baltic Sea spanning modern day Germany and Poland, where the majority of the Pomeranian’s development was done in the 8th century. It was bred for a thick coat and small size, but still weighed 9-14 kg (20-30 lbs) when imported to England. In England, the Pomeranian’s size was successfully reduced further and a variety of colors was developed. Queen Charlotte and Queen Victoria helped popularize the Pomeranian in England in the 1700’s and 1800’s, particularly Queen Victoria with her Pomeranian ‘Marco’ which she brought back from Florence, Italy. The Pomeranian was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1900 and since then has continued to shrink in size and develop a more 'powder-puff' appearance. Today it is a popular pet and show dog and the smallest breed of Northern origin.

Size: The Pomeranian has a shoulder height of 18-28 cm (7-11 in) and weighs 1.5-3 kg (3-7 lbs). It has a wedge-shaped head, small, highly-set, erect ears, and almond-shaped eyes. Pomeranians have a short neck, small feet, and breed characteristic highly-set tail carried over the back, which may take a few months to grow out and flatten. Under its coat, the Pomeranian is somewhat similar in appearance to the Chihuahua. Its head and legs should be in proper proportion to the body.

Activity: Indoor games, short walks, and playtime in the yard are sufficient activity to keep a Pomeranian happy. It is well suited to apartment life.

Size: The Labrador Retriever has a shoulder height of 53-64 cm (21-25 in) and weighs 25-36 kg (55-80 lbs). It has emotional brown or hazel eyes, a large nose, moderate stop (point at which the muzzle meets the forehead) and straight, thick tail similar in appearance to an Otter’s. Although not classified separately, the English and American lines have separate lineage. English Labradors tend to be heavier and blockier than the American Labradors which are usually tall and lanky.

Activity: Labrador Retrievers need plenty of exercise. They enjoy long walks and are especially fond of field sports, fetch, and water games.

English Bulldog

 Country of Origin: The English Bulldog (or simply ‘Bulldog’) was bred in England in the 1500’s for bull baiting, a popular gambling ‘sport’ in which one or more dogs were matched up against a chained bull (or bear). These dogs were bred for sheer fighting capacity, and they were famed for latching onto their prey with an iron jaw which they refused to release—they could even suffocate opponents this way. Easily recognizable by their distinctive and adorable ‘sourmug’, English Bulldogs serve as the mascots of dozens of sports teams, most famously Georgetown University. Other famous English Bulldogs include Handsome Dan, the Yale mascot, and Tyson, the skateboarding Bulldog of internet fame. English Bulldogs are simultaneously a symbol of British tenacity and an immensely popular American pet.

Size: The English Bulldog has a shoulder height of 31-36 cm (12-14 in) and weighs 22-25 kg (48-55 lbs). It is known for its short, wide muzzle, undershot jaw, and wide, droopy face giving the appearance of a frown. English Bulldogs have short legs and tails, rounded chests, and compact, muscular bodies.

Activity: The exercise needs of the English Bulldog are uncomplicated. It will adapt itself to the activity level of your family. Sufficient rest is key to development of healthy bones, muscles, and joints—do not expect your English Bulldog to run long distances or jump down from tall ledges. English Bulldogs are well suited to apartment life.

Country of Origin: The English Shepherd is believed to have been brought to the British Isles from Rome by Caesar himself when the Romans invaded in 55 BC. These excellent herding dogs were brought along to herd the livestock the army kept with them for food. Eventually, when the livestock was depleted and the dogs were no longer necessary, they were left behind. The English Shepherd was then acquired by natives of the area and bred with their existing dogs to create an enhanced dog with excellent abilities not only in herding, but in hunting and guarding as well. The English Shepherd then crossed the ocean with the first English settlers in America. They then followed the settlers in their colonization from the east to the west coast.

Size: The English Shepherd will typically reach an average height of 18-23 inches. The male English Shepherd will reach an average weight of 45-60 pounds while the female is slightly smaller with an average weight of 40-50 pounds.

Activity: The English Shepherd is a herding dog. It is bred to work and will be happiest with a job to do. If the English Shepherd does not have acreage to run, they will need daily long walks or jogs to get the necessary daily exercise.

Country of Origin: The Maltese (also known as the ‘Bichon Maltiase’) is the most ancient toy breed of Europe, hailing from the Mediterranean island Malta, an ancient trading port. The first written evidence of the Maltese comes from the third century B.C. Over the centuries this breed has been known by many names, including the ‘Shock Dog’, ‘Maltese Lion Dog’, ‘Spaniel Gentle’, ‘Comforter Dog’, ‘Roman Ladies’ Dog’, and my personal favorite, ‘Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta’. The name ‘Maltese’ was only assigned in the 20th century. The breed’s origins are unknown; it may descend from Spitz or an Asian breed such as the Tibetan Terrier. Maltese may have been used to hunt rodents before their royal appearance became paramount. In any case, the small, white Maltese remained isolated on the island of Malta for centuries and hence stayed true to breed. Eventually, they were exported throughout Europe and became popular with the upper class, purportedly including Mary, Queen of Scotts, Josephine Bonaparte, and Marie Antoinette. The Maltese was first imported to America in the 1870’s and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888.

Size: The Maltese has a shoulder height of 20-25 cm (8-10 in). Maltese have a domed skull, round dark eyes surrounded by a dark ‘halo’, wide, black, nose, and low ears covered by long hair. Some have a ‘winter nose’ which fades to pink in the winter; the color change can be permanent in older dogs. The Maltese carries its tail over the back and to one side and has small, round feet.

Activity: The Maltese does not require a great amount of exercise. It can have its needs met by indoor play and activities, and enjoys playing chase. Maltese are well suited to apartment life.

Country of Origin: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a scent hound, a hunting breed that originated in Brittany, France. The breed was created from the larger Grand Fauve de Bretagne. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne was believed to be near extinction after the second World War and it was said that the breed was kept alive by crossing it with the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen and wirehaired Dachshunds. However, the French Kennel Club dismisses this as a rumor. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is still utilized as a hunting dog, however, it is also commonly found as a family companion in homes throughout Europe.

Size: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a smallish-type hound. It is lighter and longer than the Basset Hound. They measure 12-15 inches in height and will typically weigh in between 36-40 pounds. However, it is possible for the Basset Fauve de Bretagne to grow taller.

Activity: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a high energy breed that will require a considerable amount of exercise. They will do best with walks twice a day as well as a large area for outdoor play. As state previously, it is not recommended to allow the Basset Fauve de Bretagne off the leash in an unsecured area, as they may catch a scent and run off after it. Be sure not to walk your Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppy for very long distances, as this can be a cause of joint issues in the future
